Welcome to our Website

Black Rock Elementary School is a Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 3 school of approximately 270 students that is nestled within the lovely hills of Litchfield County. We actively support students in their learning, academic and social development. We are fortunate to have a knowledgeable, dedicated staff that supports our students in fostering a positive collaboration with a wonderful parent base.

Each year, our school selects goals for our own emphasis on learning. It also allowed us to focus our energies towards a common purpose and establish a cooperative, community working together for student success. Our goals for the 2016-2017 school year are:

    • Implement common lessons and assessments based on Common Core State Standards.
    • Improve student learning in the areas of reading and writing.
    • Engage parents and the community at large in supporting our academic pursuits.

The purpose of our goals is to enhance the learning experience for all students at Black Rock School. It also allows us to direct our energies towards a common goal and establish a cooperative, community working together for student success.

Principal's Message

Dear Black Rock School Community,

Happy Spring!

Although it is hard to believe by looking outside, spring is upon us! Winter is hanging on, but soon enough temperatures will rise and spring will be in full bloom. Spring is a vibrant time here at Black Rock School. We have several programs, activities, and field trips planned for the spring, culminating with Step Up Day and the eventual “graduation” of our third graders as they move on to Thomaston Center School. Later this spring, third grade students will take the Smarter Balanced Assessment and our students in grades kindergarten through third grade will be taking the NWEA assessment, which will help us understand their progress this year.  Our teachers have been working progressively and focusing on instructional strategies that will benefit our students as they move forward in school and their lives in the 21st century.

As we move through this part of the year, we evaluate our progress and begin to plan for next year. Our teachers have done a great job this year. Over the last couple years, we have implemented several new instructional initiatives, which are gaining traction due to the commitment of our teachers. I am steadfast in my pursuit to guide this school as a family environment that focuses on personal growth in our students. I am appreciative of the relationship we have with the community and believe this relationship continues to grow.

Second Grade Ginger Bread House Literacy Activity

The second grade students at Black Rock School participated in a literacy enrichment extracurricular activity called "Gingerbread House Creation." Second graders read and responded to many gingerbread related texts. They also wrote a description of their project adding elaboration and details. Then they created a marvelous Gingerbread House along with their parent or adult partner. The creations were stunning and delicious! This literacy enrichment was exciting, motivating, and fun for second graders and parents both! (See pictures in Gingerbread Photo Album!)

Hartford Wolf Pack Mascot Visit

Hartford Wolf Pack Mascot Visit

Sonar, the Hartford Wolf Pack hockey team mascot, visited Black Rock School students on Friday, October 23. He came to get our students ready for Black Rock School Night at the Wolf Pack game on Saturday, November 21st. This is going to be a fun night for our families. The tickets are a great price and the games are always a fun night of entertainment. Please consider going, as it promises to be fun.  This event is sponsored by the Thomaston PTA, who has worked hard to organize this event for your enjoyment.
